Books to Read

After the Bible, these books are recommended:

Pilgrim’s Progress (Part I).

by John Bunyan

This book was written in 1678. It is unique in its kind. With its intriguing narrative you can’t go wrong by reading it. Despite the fact that it was basically written according to a dream the author had while he was in prison for his Christian faith, it shares a lot of truth with the Biblical teaching and is definitely profitable to the reader. The material presented in this book is timeless and can ever be recommended. I also recommend reading about the life of the author which was in alignment with the content and it further displays its worth. This part is about a man named “Christian” who appeared in the dream as someone who felt troubled by his sins and the coming judgment on this world, therefore, he decided to leave his wife and children who didn’t heed to his repeated warnings with love, and set out to the “Celestial City”, the heavenly Kingdom of Jesus Christ. On his journey to the world to come, he met people from different walks of life, bad and good. Interestingly, the names of the people in the narrative recapitulate their own attitude and disposition. Given the different characters of this story, the reader is kindly invited to ask a solemn question after reading the book: Whom am I like? Who is Jesus Christ to me? A Savior or a Judge? Feel free to leave your comment.

Pilgrim’s Progress (Part II).

by John Bunyan

This part was written in 1684 and it continues with the same intriguing narrative of the first part except this time with the Christian’s wife whose name is “Christiana” and with her children. The reader will find in their conversion a message full of encouragement and support. Christiana now remembers the gospel and the kindly words of her husband before his exodus to the “Celestial City”, and she decided to follow his steps toward the Heavenly Kingdom along with her children and a young woman called “Mercy”, her neighbor. The journey was full of events witnessing the everlasting love and graciousness of Jesus Christ Who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
